Welcome! My
name is Dr. Patrick Costello, however, many students at EKU refer to me
as Dr. C. This was started by the local President of Kappa Mu
Epsilon in the 1980s. Bill Cosby (Dr. C) had just received his
doctorate and was on a commercial with Julius Erving (Dr. J). At
the time, I was sharing an office with Bill Janeway and we became the
local Dr. J and Dr. C. When I first arrived at EKU in 1982 after
just finishing my Ph.D. at The Ohio State University, I started
teaching both mathematics and computer science courses. I enjoyed
teaching both subjects for many years. However, when the computer
science program applied for accreditation, I was told to make a choice
whether to teach computer science or mathematics full time. I
chose to be a full-time mathematician. Besides teaching in the
classroom, I have enjoyed working with students outside of class as
Faculty Advisor to the local chapter of KME. For a period
of three years I was interim chair and found it satisfying to become
familiar with and help lots of different groups of people inside and
outside the department. I hope these pages will give you a little
feel for who I am.
